Cosmetic dentistry procedures are an excellent option when you're not happy with the color of your teeth, or you want to cover gaps, cosmetic dentistrychips or other issues that affect the appearance of your teeth. Thomas T. Tran, DDS, your Arlington dentist, shares information about a few of the most common types of cosmetic dentistry procedures available.

Composite bonding

Dentists use composite resin bonding to cover chips and make other repairs to teeth. It's often used to fill gaps, cover discolorations, change the appearance of crooked teeth, fill teeth damaged by cavities or repair worn teeth. Your dentist molds the soft bonding material to fit your tooth, then hardens it with a special curing light.

Teeth whitening

Professional teeth whitening offers advantages that store-bought whitening kits can't. Drugstore products often take weeks or months to lighten your teeth, and in some cases, results may not be very noticeable. After a professional teeth whitening treatment, your teeth will be three to eight shades lighter, and the results can last for several years.

Veneers

Veneers help hide a variety of cosmetic issues, including gaps, chips, and discolorations. They're often used to cover unusually shaped teeth or to whiten one or more teeth. The custom-made porcelain shells are about as thick as a fingernail and are permanently attached to your teeth with dental cement.

Crowns and bridges

Crowns completely cover a tooth above the gum line and are used to protect fragile or damaged teeth or improve the appearance of discolored or oddly shaped teeth. Bridges consist of one or more false teeth attached to crowns on either side and replace a missing tooth or teeth. Crowns or bridges are often created with porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal because these materials are very strong and look like your natural tooth enamel.

Dental implants

Dental implants offer a permanent solution to missing teeth. Titanium implants are placed in an opening in your jawbone and take the place of your tooth roots. During the next few months, the implants fuse with your bone during a process called osseointegration. Once your implant fully osseointegrates, your dentist attaches a crown on top of it, which takes the place of your tooth above the gum line.
